Domtoren

Three friends from Arizona - Ruben, Tom, and Doug - visited over the past two weeks. During Ruben and Tom's second day in Amsterdam (and the day before Doug arrived), we took a train to Utrecht to check out the city center and to climb the Domtoren (Dom Tower), the large church tower in the center of town.

The Dom is 368 feet tall - the highest church tower in the Netherlands - and it can only be climbed with a tour guide. There were around 20 people on the tour, with about half Dutch, and about half foreign, so the tour guide gave the same information about the tower in Dutch and then English, with stops and talks at each opening/floor of the tower. The stops included some of the types of information you might expect - when the church was built, who lived there, etc.

As one might expect, the top of the tower provided an excellent view of the city.

The church used to extend from the tower across the tree below, but part of it was destroyed hundreds of years ago

Ruben is not impressed
